Plot

In the vast wilderness of cinematic tales of trials, tribulations, and twisted irony, "Bait" (1954) finds its place, directed by the versatile Hugo Haas. In this tale, Haas portrays Marko, an unlikely prospector, who journeys into the heart of the desert with young accomplice Ray Brighton (John Agar). Despite the incongruity of Haas' character, they stumble upon a hidden gold mine. However, Marko's greed casts a shadow over their triumph, as he concocts a labyrinthine plan to eliminate Ray, refusing to resort to simple brute force. Marko's plot thickens as he enters into a strategic marriage with the voluptuous Peggy (Cleo Moore). Despite her history of tumultuous liaisons, Marko is convinced that this marriage will serve as the perfect bait. As the trio isolates themselves in a remote cabin for the winter, Marko anticipates an inevitable adulterous affair between Peggy and Ray. He hopes to exploit the "unwritten law" to justify Ray's murder and thus evade the long arm of the law. However, as this intricate web of deceit unravels, they learn the hard way that "Murphy's Law" is the true ruler in this game of life and death.
