In the heart of sunny California, the charming British Anthropology Professor, Bruce Patterson (Terry Thomas), attempts to find tranquility in a beach house. However, his magnetic allure proves to be both a blessing and a curse. With his fiancée Helen Bushmill (Celeste Holm) overseas for an extended period, Bruce finds himself warding off the relentless affections of not only his smitten students but also the neighborhood women who find his English charm irresistible. As if the femme fatale frenzy weren't enough, Bruce's life takes another unexpected twist when Helen's seventeen-year-old daughter, Libby (Tuesday Weld), shows up unannounced. Unaware of her mother's engagement, Libby becomes another intriguing complication in the professor's already tangled web of predicaments. Bruce's neighbor, Mike (Richard Beymer) and his notoriously mischievous dachshund, further fuel the shenanigans, adding a dash of canine-induced chaos to the whirlwind of events unfolding in the "bachelor flat."
