Plot

In the serene yet isolated valley of Arratia, as the summer of 1999 unfolds, we find Ander - a farmer in his forties, caught in the relentless cycle of monotonous rural life. He shares his existence with Arantxa, his sister, and their stern, elderly mother. Ander's life is an unending tapestry of farm chores and shifts at the neighbourhood bicycle factory. With Arantxa's impending nuptials looming on the horizon, Ander is about to inherit the responsibility of caring for their unyielding mother. Life, however, throws an unexpected curveball when Ander breaks his leg, leaving him incapacitated for a couple of months. Ignoring the protests of their mother, who is resistant to change, the family hires a Peruvian immigrant, José, to lighten the burden of farm tasks. José's arrival stirs the stagnant waters of their familial relationships. The obstinate matriarch refuses to interact with José, whose Spanish is her only linguistic lifeline. Yet, Ander and Arantxa find themselves gradually drawn towards the newcomer. The friendship between the two men deepens, further complicated by a shared night of indiscretion with Reme, a single mother and prostitute from Galicia. As José and Reme, both social outsiders, forge a unique bond, Ander finds himself increasingly seeking out José's companionship. His invitation to José for Arantxa's wedding triggers a fierce showdown with his mother. Amid the tumult, a sudden, startling intimacy between Ander and José explodes, forever altering the dynamics of their relationship. This poignant tale, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Basque country, explores the complex intersections of family, friendship, and forbidden love.
