Americanizing Shelley (2007)

In the picturesque Himalayan region of India, Shalini Singh, a Punjabi-speaking middle-class girl, lives a content life with her family. Her heart, however, is set on Neil Brar, her childhood betrothed who has since relocated to the United States. Despite the vast geographical distance, Shalini nurses the dream of one day marrying and living with Neil. As familial pressure mounts due to her sister Littly's impending marriage, Shalini embarks on a journey to California, hoping to reunite with Neil who is reportedly working for Can'tAct Celebrity Management, a Hollywood artist representation agency. Reality, however, shatters her dream when she finds Neil entwined in the arms of a blonde beauty, Nicole. Shalini's dreams of marriage are dashed when Neil coldly dismisses her. In this tumultuous period, Robert Shorwell, a colleague of Neil's and a Caucasian, comes to her aid. He offers to help 'Americanize' Shalini in an attempt to win back Neil's affection. This plan, though, is twofold; it also serves to win a bet Robert has with his boss, Gary Gordon, played by Beau Bridges. Under the tutelage of Robert and his friend Blaine, Shalini undergoes a remarkable transformation. She evolves into an appealing Hispanic woman, christened as Shelley Picante, primed to win Neil back. But just as she's about to set her plan in motion, her family unexpectedly arrives in California. This throws her life into chaos, jeopardizing her plans and revealing Robert's clandestine motives behind his offer to Americanize her. The plot thickens as Shalini, now Shelley, must navigate the cultural clash and personal dilemmas while trying to reconcile her Indian roots with her newfound American persona.
