In the heart of Paris, Diane Clovier, a successful book editor in her forties and mother to two teenagers, finds herself embroiled in an intense love affair with Emilio, a young engineer. Emilio also happens to be the flatmate of François Narou, a writer whose second novel Diane is diligently guiding to fruition. This duality of her life is a precarious tightrope walk, balancing her dutiful family life with her husband, Philippe - a lawyer, and her secret, passionate encounters with Emilio. Philippe, meanwhile, is embroiled in his own turmoil as he defends their neighbor - a woman accused of killing her adulterous husband in a fit of rage.
