Acne (2008)

On the precarious precipice of adolescence, Rafa, a young boy teetering on the edge of his teens, finds himself ensnared in the enigmatic labyrinth of love and lust in this raw, coming-of-age narrative. Trapped in the tumultuous trenches of teenhood, his skin erupts in rebellion, his self-confidence dwindles, and his mind is held captive by the relentless thoughts of women. With an older brother playing the role of an unorthodox Cupid, he attempts to accelerate Rafa's journey into manhood by orchestrating a rendezvous with a willing woman from their neighborhood. Yet, after the orchestrated encounter, Rafa finds himself more mortified than matured, having yet to experience the innocent intimacy of a first kiss. Alongside his comrades Andy and Rony, he grapples to decipher the inscrutable nature of the opposite sex. Their occasional excursions to the local brothel provide them with a taste of adult indulgences, but their yearning is for the innocent companionship of their schoolmates, not the forced affections of the working girls. Rafa's attention is particularly drawn to Nicole, a girl whose beauty is so radiant that the consensus is clear - Rafa stands no chance. Yet, it's in her direction that he steadfastly sets his sights, challenging the odds and his own insecurities.
