Plot

In the tumultuous aftermath of World War II, the resilient Jean Paget embarks on a courageous journey back to the heart of Malaya. Driven by gratitude, Jean plans to construct a well for the humble village that became an unexpected sanctuary for her and fellow British expatriates during the merciless Japanese invasion. As the men were ruthlessly herded to labor camps, the women and children found themselves thrust into an endless forced march, in a desperate quest for a non-existent Women's Camp, seemingly shunned by every camp commander they encounter. Amidst the desolation, Jean forms an unlikely alliance with Joe Harman, a captive Australian soldier whose spirit remains unbroken by his bleak circumstances. Harman, in quiet defiance of his captors, risks his life to aid the women, supplying them with fragments of food and medicine, a beacon of hope in their darkest moments. However, his audacity provokes the wrath of a brutal Japanese camp commander, resulting in a savage punishment that leaves an indelible mark on Jean's memory. Haunted yet inspired by Harman's bravery, Jean is compelled to seek him out post-war, setting her course for the rugged landscapes of Australia. Unbeknownst to her, this journey will unravel revelations that will challenge her expectations, as she ventures to find the man behind her survival and the town that shaped him. This tale, woven from the perspective of Jean, is a compelling chronicle of resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring power of human connection amidst the ravages of war.
