In the sleepy town of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Evie Decker, a reserved young woman, feels invisible in the world, trapped in her mundane existence. Living with her ailing father and their devoted housekeeper, she finds solace in the rhythm of her own drumbeat but yearns for more. On the brink of despair, her life takes an unexpected turn when she hears the poignant voice of local musician Bertram "Drumstrings" Casey on the radio. His words, echoing her own internal battles, resonate within her, stoking a flame of infatuation that refuses to be extinguished. Driven by her newfound fascination, Evie musters the courage to step out of her shell and ventures to a local club to witness Drumstrings' performance.
