In the bustling heart of New York City, Samson Shillitoe, a poet of some renown, stands on the precipice of greatness, his potential marred only by the chaos that surrounds him. With his daylight hours consumed by his laborious carpet cleaning job, Samson is constantly hounded by the shadow of his past - a mounting alimony debt he dismisses as a burden for the courts and his ex-wife rather than his own. His charisma magnetizes women, and their reciprocated attraction proves a tempting distraction from his overarching ambition: to complete his magnum opus, an epic poem that has been in the works for five grueling years. But the words elude him, his creative juices stifled by a stubborn case of writer's block. This inability to express his creativity seems to fuel an increasing belligerence, and a dangerous fascination with sex, which is starting to worry his loyal and long-suffering wife, Rhoda. A hardworking waitress of humble origins, Rhoda fears that Samson's frustrations might lead him down a destructive path, possibly even to suicide. Witnessing Samson's struggle on a television talk show, she pins her hopes on the enigmatic psychotherapist Dr. Oliver West, believing him to be the panacea for her husband's problems. Reluctant at first, Samson eventually agrees to engage with Dr. West, hoping to find solace and a safe haven from the relentless police chasing his alimony debts. However, this association with Dr. West unveils a Pandora's box of complications. Samson finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue involving Dr. West's neglected wife, Lydia, and his colleague Dr. Menken, who is seeking a guinea pig for his controversial new surgical procedure - a thinly veiled lobotomy. As Samson juggles his numerous female admirers, the pursuit of the law, and the completion of his poem, he finds himself in a wild whirlwind of fine madness.
