A Farewell to Fools (2013)

In the throes of WWII, within the heart of Nazi-occupied Romania, unfolds a whimsical night of unexpected adventures sparked by a boy's grim discovery of a deceased soldier. The German command threatens a merciless dawn execution of the town's leaders unless the culprit is unmasked. Guided by the wisdom and desperation of Father Johanis, played by Harvey Keitel, the townsfolk pin their hopes of survival on a single, unlikely savior, the village "fool", Ipu, portrayed by Gérard Depardieu. They must convince him to shoulder the blame, and in doing so, offer them a lifeline through his sacrifice. As the ticking clock races toward the cruel morning, comedy mingles with the darker facets of human nature, leaving one to question who the true "fool" might be in this compelling tale of sacrifice, survival, and the human spirit.
