A Failure at Fifty (1940)

In the maelstrom of life's disappointments, an out-of-work man at the age of fifty contemplates his existence, standing at the edge of a serene lake. His world seems bleak until an enigmatic stranger materializes, weaving an engrossing tale about another 'John Jones'. This man, too, had experienced the dark trench of despair for thirty relentless years until he reached fifty, branded as a 'failure'. His depression was so profound that he feared even the possession of a pocket knife, while his friends doubted his very sanity. However, destiny played its card, and this seemingly defeated man was elevated to the presidency within a mere two years. The man in the story was none other than Abraham Lincoln. As suddenly as he appeared, the mysterious stranger vanishes, leaving behind the echo of Lincoln's wisdom: "God must have loved the common people, because he made so many of them." This newfound understanding rekindles hope in the unemployed man, reminding him that life's trials are but stepping stones to greatness.
