Plot

In the heart of Bilbao's docklands, Tocho, a gruff and ill-mannered Basque night watchman, finds his monotonous existence upended by a letter from the distant sands of Tombuctu, Mali. Propelled by news of the impending demise of Joseba - their old friend who years ago chose the African desert over Spain - Tocho sets off on a journey of redemption. His first stop, France, where he convinces Jean Pierre, their estranged companion, to join him in this mission of farewell. Reluctantly, Jean Pierre agrees, and together they seek Ely, Joseba's estranged daughter, who despite her turbulent relationship with her father, decides to seek closure on this journey. Ely's contribution to the trip is a well-preserved relic of their past - a 1982 Renault 4, a vestige from the early Paris-Dakar Rally days that Joseba once cherished. With the car tested and ready, the unlikely trio set sail from Cadiz, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta, only to be greeted by a series of misfortunes. Tocho's disdain for Ely's rebellious spirit, Jean Pierre's forgotten vulnerability to the desert heat, and an unplanned detour involving Soriano, a street drug dealer, are just the beginning. When they find themselves smuggling a young stowaway, Mamadou, the journey becomes even more complicated. As they traverse the unforgiving Sahara, their supplies dwindle, Jean Pierre's health deteriorates, and a surprise encounter with a Tuareg man named Akly leaves them robbed and desperate. Their path leads them to Alain, an old illegal trader with a bone to pick with Jean Pierre, adding another twist to their already turbulent journey. Guided by Joseba's introspective narrations about life, death, and humanity, the voyage through the harsh yet enlightening landscape of Africa transforms Tocho, Ely, and Jean Pierre. They rediscover the preciousness of life and the power of second chances, making this journey a testament to friendship, redemption, and the will to survive.
