Plot

In the bustling heart of Manhattan, Ann Stanley, a forty-year-old Norwegian-American divorcée, commands her own upscale real estate agency. She shares her life with her seventeen-year-old daughter, Trina, and her whimsically youthful mother, Maud Ericson. Despite the vibrancy that surrounds her, Ann's existence is tainted with an air of rigidity, a remnant of a loveless life post-divorce from her ex-husband, Billy Boylan—a charming yet unreliable character actor. A life-altering trip to the sun-drenched beaches of Greece with Maud introduces a softer side to Ann. An unexpected, romantic tryst with a young American man infuses her life with a spark of carefreeness that she thought was long lost. Yet, she guards this secret closely, revealing nothing about her mysterious lover. Fate, however, has a delightful twist in store when she stumbles upon this very man in New York. He is Peter Latham, a twenty-two-year-old steel heir and a friend of her daughter, Trina. While Ann is gently nudged towards a wealthy southern gentleman, J.D. Rogers, by her circle, Peter pursues her with a quiet determination, unbeknownst to all, setting the stage for a complicated love triangle. As Peter's feelings for Ann deepen, she is torn between the flattery of his attentions and the stark reality of their age difference. Her internal struggle is mirrored by the confusion around her—Maud, misinterpreting the situation, believes Peter’s affections are for Trina. In the midst of this emotional whirlwind, Ann must confront her repressed feelings, test the waters of this unconventional romance, and decide her own fate. As Trina navigates her own issues, Ann's interactions with Billy and her encounters with Peter's world may provide her with the clarity she needs. Will she take the leap, or will she retreat into her shell, forever wondering about the love that could have been? This captivating tale of love, age, and societal norms explores the complex dynamics of relationships and the courage it takes to follow one's heart.
