1898: Our Last Men in the Philippines (2016)

In the tumultuous year of 1898, Spain dispatches a military unit to Baler, a remote town in the Philippines, to safeguard one of their last colonies from the relentless siege of defiant natives seeking to reclaim their ancestral lands. Under the stalwart leadership of Captain Enrique de las Morenas and Lieutenant Cerezo, these brave soldiers find themselves shadowed by the menacing presence of the rebels during the night, compelling them to seek sanctuary in the town's church, presided over by Fray Carmelo. The sacred haven swiftly transforms into a fortress, a bulwark against the advancing enemy. However, the men are not only battling the rebels but also the sweltering heat and the insidious creep of malaria. The Captain succumbs to beriberi, a disease as relentless as the siege, thrusting Cerezo into the precarious position of command, further complicated by his power tussle with Jimeno, a survivor from a previous squad decimated by the rebels. As Cerezo becomes increasingly consumed by paranoia and an obsessive quest for victory, the glory of the Spanish Empire becomes his only beacon. The rebels, sensing his desperation, reveal that Spain has relinquished the Philippines to the USA, thereby ending the war. But Cerezo, blinded by his obstinate resolve, discredits the news and stands defiant at the helm. Inside the fortified church, the battle rages on for months, with the men's spirits dwindling under the strain. Among them is Carlos, a soldier who's succumbed to the lure of opium, who embarks on his desperate quest to halt the senseless conflict. As he grapples with the chilling suspicion that all hope may be lost, Carlos becomes a beacon of hope, striving to avert the looming shadow of death from his comrades.
