Plot

In the merciless game of British politics, Francis Urquhart is a seasoned player. As the Chief Whip of the Conservative Party, his calculating mind has been a cornerstone in the political landscape. When Margaret Thatcher relinquishes her leadership, Urquhart remains diplomatically impartial, ready to reap his just rewards — a high-ranking Cabinet position. He anticipates the freshly elected Prime Minister, Henry Collingridge, to reciprocate his loyalty with a promotion. However, the cruel tides of political fortune leave him high and dry. Urquhart is informed he is to remain in his current role, a bitter pill that fuels his ambition, and he begins to weave an intricate web to dethrone Collingridge. His masterstroke lies in his manipulation of an eager junior political reporter, Mattie Storin, to garner a more favourable press coverage than the Prime Minister. His scheme initially unfolds as he planned, but the tide begins to turn when Storin, driven by her journalistic instincts, starts unravelling the recent political events. Urquhart's machinations form a captivating dance of power and betrayal. His quest to ascend to the apex of power in the House of Cards reveals the ruthless underbelly of the political world, where loyalty is a mere commodity and ambition is the only true currency.
