Plot

In the bustling city of Barcelona, at its pinnacle of prosperity, the denizens of the Ribera, the Fishermen's Quarter, unite in an audacious endeavor. With collective resources and unyielding toil, they embark on the construction of the grandest Marian sanctuary ever conceived: Santa María de la Mar. This monumental undertaking mirrors the life of Arnau, a child shielded from feudal tyranny by his agriculturalist father, Bernat. Seeking refuge in the county capital, they embrace citizenship, tasting the sweet liberation of free men. Bernat labors as a potter and horse keeper, striving to raise Arnau to the best of his ability and eventually welcoming a second son into their family. Tragedy strikes when famine and revolt claim Bernat's life, leaving a young Arnau to navigate life's rough seas alone. Arnau finds his footing as a stevedore, eventually ascending the social ladder to become a successful money changer. His life, a testament to resilience and fortitude, unfolds under the watchful gaze of the Cathedral of the Sea. His journey sees him rise from the ashes of his father's fugitive existence to attain nobility and wealth. However, Arnau's meteoric rise is not without its perils. His newfound prestige stokes the flames of envy among his contemporaries, who weave an insidious plot that lands his life in the merciless clutches of the Inquisition. Thus unfolds the gripping saga of a man whose life is intertwined with the fate of a cathedral, the symbol of his strength and survival.
