Plot

In the heart of New York City, 1897, a Christmas-loving eight-year-old named Virginia O'Hanlon finds her world rocked by a question from her peers: "Does Santa Claus exist?" Unsure of the answer and driven by an insatiable curiosity, Virginia embarks on a quest through the bustling city, seeking truth from an array of colourful figures. Her journey leads her to a raggedy Santa Claus ringing his bell in the cold, a librarian whose enthusiasm for Christmas literature is as vast as his collection, and her whimsically rational father, a doctor. Yet, the answers continue to elude Virginia, prompting her to pen a heartfelt letter to The New York Sun newspaper. Her innocent query lands on the cluttered desk of the gruff editor, Francis Church, who initially dismisses the task of responding to the child's question as trivial. But Virginia's relentless spirit, coupled with a surprising nudge from the scruffy street Santa, persuades Mr. Church to pen a reply. Little does he know, his response would transform into the most renowned newspaper editorial ever written, forever shaping the spirit of Christmas for generations to come.
