In the breathtaking vastness of Montana's plains, Virgil First Raise stirs from an alcoholic stupor in a roadside ditch, his face marred by a shiner, his mind clouded by a hangover. As he greets the day, he is confronted by an impossible vision of his father, dead at his feet, a man who years ago succumbed to the unforgiving winter. Returning home, Virgil discovers the absence of his wife, Agnes, who has not only deserted him but also absconded with his cherished rifle and electric razor. Thus begins Virgil's odyssey along Montana's hi-line, a journey punctuated by drunken encounters, sensual clashes, and unexpected dalliances with the enigmatic 'Airplane Man'. As Virgil navigates this bewildering terrain, he is haunted by the spectral echoes of his past, including the bittersweet memories of his dearly departed brother Mose. Only when he seeks wisdom from Yellow Calf, a sightless elder, does Virgil begin to unravel the tangled threads of his origins. As he embarks on this path of self-discovery, he starts to melt the frost encasing his heart, gradually illuminating the frigid corners of his existence. "Winter in the Blood" is a poignant journey of a man wrestling with his past, his identity, and the icy shadows of loss and longing.
