Plot

In the turbulent year of 1937, bright-eyed northerner Chuck Glover is assigned as the last hope to head the property acquisition office of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). His mission? To secure the last piece of land needed for a monumental dam project, an idyllic river island owned by the fiercely independent octogenarian Ella Garth. As Chuck steps foot on the island, he discovers a world woven with four generations of Garths and numerous black sharecroppers, who find their haven under Mrs. Garth's compassionate protection. Chuck's superiors urge him to avoid the storm of negative publicity that would come from forcibly evicting an eighty-year-old woman, thus, he must find a way to negotiate with the resilient Mrs. Garth. However, his initial encounters leave him questioning her sanity, only to later discover her to be one of the most principled and clear-minded individuals he's ever met. As he grapples with his growing respect and affection for Mrs. Garth, Chuck also finds himself entangled in the struggle to protect the rights of the black sharecroppers—an endeavor that draws the ire of the local white supremacists led by the formidable Hank Bailey. Adding layers to this intricate drama is a burgeoning romance between Chuck and Mrs. Garth's widowed granddaughter, Carol Baldwin. However, this newfound love is not without its complications, as Carol is engaged to the kind-hearted Walter Clark—a man she doesn't love, but considers marrying for the sake of providing a father figure to her two small children. "Wild River" (1960) is a compelling exploration of cultural clashes, the fight against social injustices, and the intricate webs of human relationships, all set against the backdrop of an impending dam project that threatens to flood the very heart of their community.
