Plot

In the verdant expanses of rural France, a tradition of rivalry stirs the tranquil countryside as two factions of boys from the pastoral villages of Longeverne and Velran engage in an unending war. This inherited discord, a legacy passed from father to son, thrives not on any tangible motive but rather on the deeply ingrained rivalry between the local peasants. Amidst the turbulence of the 1960s Algerian War, the Longeverne boys find a leader in the astute William Lebrac, who has shouldered the responsibility of his family after his father's death. In contrast, the Velran boys rally behind the malevolent Aztec, setting the stage for a battle marked by wooden swords, traps hidden in the woods, and an onslaught of rotten fruits. However, this war has a unique victory trophy - the buttons from the enemies' clothes, a symbol of triumph and humiliation. As the battles rage on, young Lebrac is on the cusp of adulthood and finds himself drawn to the enchanting Lanterne. Simultaneously, his teacher Merlin presents an opportunity for a better education in a distant village. "War of the Buttons" is a vibrant portrayal of rural rivalries, childhood wars, and the poignant journey of a young boy navigating the threshold of maturity amidst the chaos of tradition and conflict. This tale of rivalry, romance, and growing up unravels against the backdrop of a country caught in its own war, making it a captivating watch.
