Plot

In the twilight of her youth, Ann Hamilton, the bookish daughter of esteemed Science Professor David Hamilton, affectionately known as Dink, has comfortably embraced her life as a spinster. Her world, filled with intellect and simplicity, seems unperturbed by the persistent but unrequited love of Dink's colleague, Professor Joseph Bangs. Yet, in a surprising twist of fate, she finds herself drawn to Alan Garroway, a charismatic and wealthy industrialist whose business dealings intertwine with Dink's. In the wake of a whirlwind romance, Ann and Alan unite in matrimony. Alan's fortune, amassed from a family business supplying aircraft parts to the military during the war, enables a life of opulence and high society spanning from San Francisco to his childhood home in Middleburg, Virginia. Yet, as Ann attempts to navigate this new world, she finds herself grappling with doubts. She feels like a misfit amidst Alan's sophisticated circle, although he assuages her fears by becoming her mentor in the ways of fashion and etiquette. However, a more significant concern gnaws at Ann’s heart. She realizes that there's a side to Alan she doesn't truly understand, a mystery epitomized by his estranged brother Michael. Once an integral part of the family business, Michael was banished after Alan accused him of theft. Despite her love and trust for Alan, Ann feels an inexplicable connection to the enigmatic Michael, which prompts her to investigate him further, possibly risking her newfound marriage and her own safety. The truth of Michael's story hangs precariously, threatening to unravel Ann's life, dependent on whether Alan has been honest about his brother.
