In the aftermath of a gut-wrenching breakup, Jessie seeks solace in an unconventional way. He acquires a sheet of potent acid, intending to share it with his old friends back in his Missouri hometown, hoping to erase the bitter memories of a college romance that ended in the worst possible manner. Leaving New Orleans behind, Jessie veers off the familiar interstate, instead choosing the less-traveled Route 61, in search of a refreshing change from his mundane routine.
Fate, however, has other plans. Jessie's journey comes to an abrupt halt in the middle of a desolate trailer park in Cleveland, Mississippi, when his engine sputters and dies. Surrounded by intimidating bikers, he barter his L.S.D. for a shot at safe passage home. As the day unravels, the ordinary takes a turn towards the extraordinary. The mundane world around him begins to sparkle with an uncanny surrealism, as Jessie breathes new life into the lives of those he encounters.
