Immersed in the rich tapestry of human stories and mythology, Dr Alithea Binnie, a British narratologist, finds herself in the heart of Istanbul. She is a creature of reason, content in her academic pursuits and always seeking the common truths that bind human narratives together. A chance encounter in a quaint antiquities shop leads Alithea to a hand-blown crystal bottle, an artefact as mysterious as the city itself. Within the crystalline container, a supernatural force awaits release - a Djinn, a Genie of ancient lore. When the curious academic unwittingly sets free the otherworldly entity, she is plunged into an extraordinary saga spun over three thousand years. The Genie, portrayed by Idris Elba, enthrals Alithea with his mesmerising tales and presents her with a tempting offer - three wishes in exchange for his freedom. But Alithea, portrayed by Tilda Swinton, is no naïve wish-maker. As an expert in narrative and mythology, she is all too aware of the cautionary tales of wishes spiralling into disaster. Moreover, she questions the very reality of the Djinn, a figure from the stories she has studied, now standing before her. The Djinn, desperate for freedom, pleads his case, his stories growing more fantastical and compelling. Caught in this whirlwind of ancient lore and present dilemmas, Alithea grapples with her skepticism and knowledge of the trickster Djinn's manipulative tendencies. The question looms large - to wish or not to wish? As she contemplates her decision, she ultimately makes a wish that catches both her and the Djinn off guard.
