Plot

Edward Kendal Sheridan Lionheart, portrayed by the inimitable Vincent Price, is an adored Shakespearean actor from a bygone era. Struggling to adapt to the evolving theatre landscape, Lionheart finds himself overlooked for the prestigious Guild's "Best Actor" award, a recognition he believes he richly deserves. The accolade, instead, goes to a rising star, much to Lionheart's chagrin. In a dramatic turn of events, the spurned actor confronts the Critics' Circle, his impassioned plea falling on deaf ears. Devastated, he takes a suicidal plunge into the murky depths of the Thames, only to be rescued by vagabonds with an affinity for potent spirits. Presumed dead by the world, Lionheart sees an opportunity to orchestrate his revenge. Rising like a specter from the past, Lionheart embarks on a chilling mission to exact vengeance on the critics who dared to rob him of his crowning glory. Employing the artistry that once made him a matinée idol, he meticulously recreates death scenes from his beloved Shakespeare's repertoire, making his detractors pay in the most macabre and darkly humorous ways. Dame Diana Rigg stands by his side as the dutiful daughter Edwina, supporting Lionheart in his unhinged quest for justice. The plot also features stellar performances from a host of British character actors, including Ian Hendry, Sir Michael Hordern, Dennis Price, Robert Morley, and Arthur Lowe. Theatre of Blood (1973) is a pitch-dark comedy, a tale of revenge soaked in theatrical grandeur and bloody irony, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate the sinisterly clever side of cinema.
