Plot

In the dusty and forgotten railroad outpost of Liberty, Texas, whispers of hidden gold ignite a fervor among a motley crew of individuals. The first to heed the call are three battle-hardened Union army veterans: the stalwart Lane (John Wayne), the sharp-eyed Jesse (Ben Johnson), and the rugged Grady (Rod Taylor). Their ranks are bolstered by a trio of restless drifters: the enigmatic Ben (Bobby Vinton), the quick-witted Sal (Jerry Gatlin), and the brash Calhoun (Christopher George). Their golden journey is catalyzed by the enigmatic Mrs. Lowe (Ann-Marget), a train robber's widow, who holds the key to the whereabouts of a buried gold shipment. The rugged and resilient Lane remarks that their quest for riches will not go unnoticed, as they will be relentlessly hunted by the ghostly remnants of the deceased robber's gang and every trigger-happy gunfighter in the territory. As they navigate the perilous terrain crossing the Texas border and the swirling waters of the Rio Grande River into Mexico, they barely stay a step ahead of a tireless band of pursuers. All the while, the mysterious specter of a well-dressed, cigar-smoking stranger observes the unfolding drama with a keen eye, his intentions as nebulous as the desert mirages. In this cat-and-mouse game of pursuit and survival, the allure of gold becomes a crucible, testing loyalties, courage, and the human spirit.
