The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)

Beneath the pulsating heart of New York City, an unassuming subway train, Pelham 1:23, becomes the stage for a pulse-pounding drama. Four seemingly unrelated men, known only by their color-coded aliases - Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, Mr. Grey, and Mr. Brown - board the train at successive stations, armed to the teeth and ready to execute a daring plan. The motorman and novice conductor are swiftly overpowered, and in the darkness between stations, the front car is chillingly separated from the rest of the train, setting the passengers in the rear cars and the motorman free. The ruthless quartet demands a staggering $1 million ransom for the remaining eighteen hostages, including the conductor, within the span of a mere hour. As the city above descends into chaos, the wisecracking Lt. Zach Garber of the Transit Authority police finds himself playing the dangerous game of negotiating with the hijackers. His challenge is not only to outwit the cunning Mr. Blue but also to navigate the complex web of city authorities, his own police force, the NYPD and a flu-ridden, unpopular mayor who holds the power to pay the ransom or not. What Garber doesn't know is that among the terrified hostages is a plain-clothes NYPD officer. What he does know is that he must unravel the mystery of how the hijackers plan to escape from their underground labyrinth. The tension mounts as the disparate natures of the hijackers - the methodical Mr. Blue, trigger-happy Mr. Grey, and sickly Mr. Green - begin to affect the dynamics of the plot, making every ticking second a battle for survival. As the clock races towards the harrowing deadline, Garber must unlock the secret of the four hijackers' escape plan, all while navigating the dangerous confines of the subway tunnel and the ever-present threat of the train's dead-man mechanism.
