Plot

In the comically ordinary universe of superheroes and supervillains, Max McCabe (Rob Benedict) has carved out his niche as the ever-dependable sidekick to the legendary Captain Wonder (Ron Livingston). His world of danger and high-stakes action is punctuated by the gleam of his boss's golden lasso and his own energetic catchphrases, including the iconic "Look out!" and "Here, catch!" However, as Max nears his 40s, he finds his enthusiasm for these minor tasks dwindling, and his once vibrant energy replaced by a growing indifference. His complacency leads to an unexpected dismissal, catapulting him into a world that has seemingly forgotten the value of a seasoned sidekick. Suddenly, Max is adrift in a society that has no need for an aging ex-professional buddy. Struggling to compete with the youthful energy of rising stars and grappling with his lack of "real world" skills, Max teeters on the brink of despair. Yet, just as his life is threatening to unravel, he crosses paths with the charming and compassionate Bailey (Lizzy Caplan), an elementary school teacher who sees the world through a unique lens. Bailey's kindness sparks a glimmer of hope in Max, leading him to realize that life beyond sidekicking might not be as bleak as he'd imagined. As he navigates this new world under her gentle guidance, he discovers that even an old sidekick can find his place in the real world. "The Sidekick," directed by Michael J. Weithorn and starring an ensemble of comedic talents, offers a fresh and humorous lens on the superhero genre. Simultaneously, it serves as a poignant allegory about finding one's purpose in life, even when it seems as though life is repurposing you.
