Plot

In the bustling heart of London, aristocrat Tony (James Fox) welcomes the seemingly loyal and efficient Hugo Barrett (Sir Dirk Bogarde) into his home as his all-in-one servant. Barrett's quiet and submissive demeanor initially paints him as the ideal servant amidst the opulence of Tony's lifestyle. However, Tony's girlfriend Susan (Wendy Craig) finds an unsettling air around Barrett, pleading with Tony to dismiss him. As the tale unfolds, Barrett introduces his sister Vera (Sarah Miles) into the household staff, a move that sets in motion a clandestine love affair with Tony. When Tony and Susan return unexpectedly from a trip, they find Barrett and Vera – who are in fact secret lovers – in a compromising position, leading to their dismissal and a rupture in Tony and Susan's relationship. As time passes, Tony and Barrett cross paths in a dimly lit pub, and in an unexpected turn, Tony rehires the servant. Barrett, now back in the house, slowly discards his submissive facade, revealing his darker intentions. As the tension rises, the traditional master-servant dynamic crumbles, and a sinister game of power play ensues. With Barrett's true character surfacing, the house that once echoed with aristocratic charm now resonates with an unsettling power shift, leaving the once dominant Tony at the mercy of his servant's manipulative grasp. "The Servant" is a chilling tale that blurs the lines between loyalty and deceit, power and submission, master and servant.
