Plot

In the year 1985, Harvard-researcher Dr. Dennis Alan, fresh from a successful exploration in Amazonas, is beckoned by Andrew Cassedy, the president of a distinguished Boston-based pharmaceutical company. Intrigued by the enigmatic tale of a man named Christophe, who reportedly died in 1978 only to return from the grave, Cassedy tasks Dr. Alan with the mission to unveil the secrets of a potent voodoo drug thought to be the catalyst of this resurrection. Cassedy's interest lies in the potential of this mysterious substance as a groundbreaking anesthetic. Dr. Alan embarks on his journey to the turbulent terrains of Haiti, a nation caught in the tumult of revolution and the aftermath of dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier's fall. He aligns with Dr. Marielle Duchamp, who has been tending to the supposedly risen Christophe, and together they delve into the chaos that consumes Haiti, where the line between science and superstition blurs in the face of anarchistic society, rampant police corruption, and prevalent witch-doctory. However, danger lurks around every corner. Dr. Alan soon finds himself in the menacing crosshairs of Dargent Peytraud, the dreaded chief of the Tonton Macuse, a notorious torturer, and a powerful witch. Amidst this volatile concoction of rebellion and black magic, Dr. Alan must navigate through the pandemonium, distinguish between reality and legend, and unravel the truth behind the "zombie" drug. As he steps into this whirlwind of uncertainty and danger, Dr. Alan discovers that death is just the beginning of a journey that spirals towards the unimaginable. In this twisting tale of science and the supernatural, he learns that in Haiti, nothing is as it seems, and the shadows of the dead can dance in the Serpent and the Rainbow.
