The Rag Nymph (1997)

Plot

In the grime-coated streets of mid-19th Century Newcastle, ten-year-old Millie finds herself orphaned as her prostitute mother vanishes, fleeing from the relentless pursuit of law enforcement. Fortune sees her taken under the protective wing of rag lady Aggie Winkovski and her disabled aide, Ben. As Millie's refined manners contrast starkly with her dire circumstances, Aggie delves into the child's past, discovering her mother's fall from a lady's maid to a life of forced degradation. Aggie, against all odds, assumes a guardian's role, shielding young Millie from the lecherous gaze of Boswell, a notorious local pimp with intentions as murky as the city's back alleys. Within the protective cocoon of Aggie's humble abode, Millie blossoms from a well-mannered child into an educated and joyous young woman. But the specter of Boswell and his clientele looms threateningly, casting a shadow over Millie's newfound happiness. Despite their meager means, Aggie and Ben strive to keep Millie safe, but the question lingers -- can they truly shield her from the clutches of the city's underbelly and secure her future?
