In the early 1900s, the Reverend Charles Fortescue, portrayed by Sir Michael Palin, finds himself plucked from a decade-long missionary sojourn in Africa and thrust back into the bustling heart of England. He receives an unusual assignment from his Bishop - to shepherd the lost souls of London's ladies of the night. Eager for an escape route, Charles hopes his betrothed, the charmingly naive Deborah Fitzbanks, played by Phoebe Nicholls, will protest against this peculiar assignment. However, Deborah’s unblemished innocence blinds her to the reality of his mission, and she encourages him to rise to the challenge. The affluent Lady Isabel Ames, brought to life by Dame Maggie Smith, holds the purse strings for this endeavour. Yet, she coyly holds the funds hostage, enticing Charles with a proposition - her financial support in exchange for a share in his bed. This juxtaposition of duty, love, and temptation creates a captivating narrative that explores the often blurred lines between virtue, vice and devotion.
