In the aftermath of war, Ken, a former GI, grapples with a life altered by paralyzing wounds suffered on the battlefield. Back in the safety of his homeland, he finds himself confined within the sterile walls of a hospital, swallowed by a whirlpool of depression. A compassionate Dr. Brock and Ken's devoted fiancée, Ellen, act as his lifelines, guiding him through the storm. As Ken battles his isolation, he forges bonds with fellow patients - the intellectual cynic Norm, the sharp-witted Leo, and the stoic Angel. Their camaraderie fuels his drive for recovery. With relentless physical therapy and a glimmer of hope, he begins to entertain the possibility of regaining mobility. Encouraged by Dr. Brock, Ken and Ellen take a leap of faith into matrimony. However, their wedding night unearths a minefield of doubts. Ellen is daunted by the magnitude of her new role, while Ken sinks back into a quagmire of self-pity. An explosive argument ensues, driving Ken back to the hospital. In this crucible, Ken's fiery rage is met with cold indifference from his comrades. A profound conversation with Dr. Brock ignites a revelation.
