The Last Days of Pompeii (1984)

Plot

In the opulent coastal resort of Pompeii, near Naples, a diverse tapestry of lives unfolds against the backdrop of imperial Rome's extravagant wealth. Among the denizens of this doomed city is Diomed, a self-made merchant whose fortune earned from trade fuels his political ambitions, setting him against Quintus, the city's current magistrate. He also dreams of an aristocratic marriage for his beloved daughter Julia, a goal that teeters between ambition and aspiration. His path crosses with the refined Greek, Glaucus, and the formidable gladiator, Lydon. Meanwhile, the noble-born siblings Antonius and Ione navigate the treacherous waters of Pompeian society, pursued by the sinister Isis-priest Arbaces, a man consumed by his lust for wealth and power. In the shadows, the Christian slaves Petrus and Chloe, bound by a forbidden love, worship in secret under the guidance of their covert leader, Olinthus. They live in constant fear of persecution, their faith a beacon of hope in a city teetering on the edge of disaster. Their tales intertwine, their fates sealed by the imminent eruption of the Vesuvian volcano, an impending catastrophe that threatens to wipe Pompeii from the face of the Earth. This vivid portrayal of life and love, ambition and fear, offers an intimate glimpse into the final days of Pompeii.
