Plot

In the chilling autumn of 2006, Northern Ireland finds itself entwined in the gnarled roots of the bloody Troubles, a conflict that has shadowed its streets for decades. Amidst the escalating tension sparked by the 9/11 attacks, the Protestant Unionist and Catholic Republican factions are pressed to explore a possible peace agreement under the stern gaze of U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, portrayed by Toby Stephens. The key negotiators, Ian Paisley, the fiery leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (Timothy Spall), and Martin McGuinness, the tenacious Sinn Fein politician (Colm Meaney), are long-standing adversaries, their enmity stretching across the years. As negotiations are about to commence in the austere landscape of St. Andrews, Scotland, Paisley finds himself compelled to return home to Northern Ireland for his 50th wedding anniversary. Weather conditions, as unpredictable as the political landscape, close the nearby airport, pushing Paisley to take a more circuitous route via a private jet from a distant airport. McGuinness, sensing a pivotal opportunity, insists on accompanying Paisley—a decision that sets them both on an unexpected journey. The duo find themselves enclosed within the tight confines of a van, their journey meticulously observed by the hawkish eyes of Prime Minister Blair and his MI5 team through hidden cameras and microphones. With the young driver, a silent puppet of the MI5, subtly steering their conversation, Paisley and McGuinness find themselves on a path of discovery. The journey forces them to traverse the chasms of their differences, bridging the seemingly unbridgeable, and possibly altering the trajectory of Northern Ireland's turbulent history. Meanwhile, the world watches, holding its breath, as these two foes embark on a journey that could either deepen the divide or herald an era of peace.
