Ann Dexter, the spirited daughter of a roguish Haiti dockside dweller, Carl Dexter, comes into possession of a mysterious golden idol, clandestinely seized by her father during a cryptic voodoo ritual. With the enigmatic idol in hand, she seeks out Bill Buchanan, a man known far and wide along the waterfront as an unrelenting treasure hunter. Intrigued by the idol's potential, Buchanan agrees to let Ann join him on what promises to be a perilous yet potentially rewarding quest.
Equipped with an indigenous map, voodoo charms, and a shared thirst for adventure, they navigate through a hidden underwater passage, leading them to an uncharted island inhabited by a Pagan tribe. Their arrival unravels a deeply-rooted tribal secret. The golden idol, it transpires, is a sacred token of the tribe's deceased, and hundreds more lie submerged in the hallowed waters of their burial lake. Their quest becomes a tightrope walk between the allure of golden riches and the respect for ancient traditions.
