Plot

In the fading twilight of a bygone era, Archie Rice (Sir Laurence Olivier) stands, stubborn and resolute. Once a revered music hall headliner, he now finds himself on the precipice of irrelevance in a British seaside resort. His shows, relics of a dying form of entertainment, draw sparse and unenthusiastic crowds, yet Archie clings desperately to his declining career and decadent lifestyle. His world is a chaotic whirl of heavy drinking, chronic infidelity, and financial turmoil, hidden beneath a veneer of stale humor and worn-out song-and-dance routines. At the heart of his tumultuous life is his family. His father, Billy Rice (Roger Livesey), is a retired vaudeville star living in the shadow of his past successes. His second wife, Phoebe Rice (Brenda de Banzie), is a long-suffering woman who drowns her sorrows in alcohol, fully aware of Archie's infidelity. Their son, Frank Rice (Sir Alan Bates), loyally supports his father's fading career as a stage manager. The family's uneasy equilibrium is further complicated by Archie's daughter, Jean Rice (Dame Joan Plowright), an art school teacher in London, grappling with her own life decisions while worrying about her brother Mick Rice (Albert Finney), sent overseas to fight in the Suez Crisis. Despite being on the brink of bankruptcy, Archie's ambition remains undeterred. He manipulates those around him in a desperate attempt to mount a new show and keep his creditors at bay. He even lures his retired father back into the spotlight for a benefit performance intended to salvage his own financial ruin. Phoebe yearns for a more stable life, dreaming of managing a hotel in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, an offer from her relatives that Archie dismisses. As Archie's selfish machinations escalate, he threatens to shatter the fragile harmony of his family. His crude philosophical jokes about sex and politics, coupled with his relentless humiliation of his wife, paint a poignant picture of a man refusing to face reality. The Entertainer (1960) is a compelling exploration of a family's struggle for survival amidst the backdrop of a rapidly changing world, where old forms of entertainment are fading into obscurity, and personal ambitions threaten to overshadow the bonds of love and kinship.
