Plot

In the vibrant universe of pop music, a star's shine can dim all too quickly, a fact twenty-four-year-old singer Cliff Donner knows all too well. Once a sensation, Cliff now finds himself labeled a has-been, pushed aside by his manager for the more mature tones of "old people" music. Yet, his fall from grace doesn't dampen his spirit, instead, it fuels his desire for a happier life behind the scenes, crafting hits rather than crooning them. Meanwhile, in the pulsating heart of Los Angeles, Hallie Rodgers, a go-go dancer, yearns for her moment in the spotlight. Despite impressing the producers with her auditions, she remains confined to the background on the popular music show, "Whizbam". Fed up with being sidelined, Hallie stages a daring on-air rebellion, disrupting a live performance by Glen Campbell, seizing the microphone, and dancing with reckless abandon. Her spontaneous performance sparks a nationwide sensation, birthing a new dance craze known as the "Tantrum". Hallie's fiery display catches the eye of Cliff Donner during a performance at Stan's Cellar, a cozy Palm Springs club owned by Stanley Krumley. Sensing a unique opportunity, Cliff proposes a creative collaboration to catapult Hallie's career. However, the entrance of Stanley's eccentric brother Tony Krum, a renowned music producer, adds an unexpected twist. Tony's grand scheme involves Cliff performing alongside Hallie to boost her profile, but it also includes a secret task for Hallie: to make Cliff fall in love with her and propose marriage, all in the name of publicity. As Hallie and Cliff navigate the turbulent tides of fame and their growing feelings for each other, the lines between personal and professional begin to blur. The question becomes: Can their love survive the machinations of the music industry, especially once Cliff discovers Hallie's secret assignment? The Cool Ones (1967) is a fast-paced journey through the highs and lows of pop stardom, where ambition, love, and the art of the "Tantrum" collide.
