Plot

In the bustling hubbub of Frankfurt's renowned book fair, Judith Cass, a diligent reporter from Halifax Chronicle-Herald, navigates through the maze of literary personalities. Her mission is to pen a compelling feature on Jonathan Matthews, a rising Canadian author with a mysterious manuscript rumored to bear historical significance. The story, however, takes a dramatic twist when Jonathan suddenly collapses and breathes his last during the opening night celebrations. The shocking revelation of his death by poison sends ripples through the fair. Marsha Hillier, Judith's friend and the publisher entangled in a complex history with Jonathan, is also in Frankfurt to promote Margaret Dourie Cantor's unfinished book - another star author in her repertoire. Yet, her voyage is far from smooth. She's grappling with Margaret's aloofness towards the book fair's buyers and the insipid quality of her recent chapters. The intricate web further entangles Martin Barrett - Margaret's agent, who also represented Jonathan. Jonathan's unexpected murder evolves into a labyrinth of mysteries that Marsha is desperate to unravel, not only to find a riveting story but also to aid her troubled friend. Joining forces with Ernst Murnau, the seasoned Frankfurt police inspector assigned to the case, Judith dives headfirst into the investigation. Amidst the chaos of the book fair, they believe that the key to unlocking Jonathan's murder lies within the cryptic pages of his unfinished manuscript.
