Set amid the rustic backdrop of 18th century England, a humble farmer, Ralph Gower, uncovers a chilling artifact - a one-eyed, fur-covered skull - buried deep within the fields of his pastoral homeland. His attempt to alert the local judge about his ghastly discovery proves futile as the skull mysteriously vanishes. In a parallel narrative, the young and earnest Peter Edmonton brings his betrothed, Rosalind Barton, to his aunt's home, planning their nuptials.
