Plot

In the heart of Calcutta during the early 1960s, Bhambal finds himself shouldering the financial burden for his family, which includes his wife, Arati, their young son, his teenage sister, and aging parents. Money is a scarce commodity, prompting Arati to step out of traditional confines and venture into the working world. Her success not only brings joy but also sparks a tumultuous tempest within their domestic sphere, with her in-laws igniting a silent yet palpable war of disapproval. The situation intensifies when Bhambal loses his job, making Arati's income vital for their survival. This turn of events sows seeds of self-doubt in Bhambal, leading to a widening chasm between him and his wife. Meanwhile, at work, Arati forms an unlikely friendship with Edith, an Anglo-Indian firebrand who smokes, swears, and flaunts lipstick. Edith's influence pushes Arati towards a boldness that teeters on the edge of insolence with her amiable boss. With her job hanging by a thread, Arati's impulsive actions set her on a precarious path. The question that looms is: who will comprehend her choices and stand by her in this tumultuous journey? The Big City paints a vivid picture of a woman navigating the crossroads of tradition and independence, personal growth and familial duty, love and self-respect.
