In the bustling city of Manchester, 1969, the ordinary lives of insurance salesman Jimmy 'Tubby' Baker and the reserved secretary Enid intersect during a televised reunion at the Free Trade Hall. A nostalgic echo from thirty years prior binds them together; they were once part of a school choir that breathed life into the record 'Nymphs and Shepherds, Come Away.' Amidst a sea of faces, Tubby and Enid find solace in their shared disdain for the pompous reunion organizer, Frank, and his equally arrogant wife. Frank’s attempt at impressive hospitality, a dinner at the upscale Berni Inn, only cements Tubby and Enid's bond. Tubby, drawn to Enid's quiet strength, yearns to court her, but Enid is entangled in a clandestine love affair with her married boss, clinging to a fading hope that he will abandon his wife for her. As Tubby navigates his growing feelings for Enid, he's haunted by his past. He remembers his younger self, Little Jimmy, and the stern gaze of his widowed mother who disapproved of his choir singing. The only encouraging voice was Mr. Kirkby, a Great War veteran and the assistant to the choir mistress Gertrude Riall. Despite his physical disability, Mr. Kirkby inspired young Jimmy to be a part of something bigger than himself. Now, Tubby realizes he must channel the boldness of his younger self. He must convince Enid that her lover's promises are nothing but empty whispers, and that their destinies were intertwined long before they realized, on that day when they sang together. Their shared history and unspoken connection could be the key to a future neither of them expected.
