Plot

In the throbbing heart of the 1990s, the Handy Kaufmans, New Jersey's premier underachieving rock band, straddle the cusp of oblivion and stardom. As the echoes of Kurt Cobain's tragic demise still reverberate through the music scene, this band of misfits and dreamers set out on their last stand tour, a journey that could either fast-track them to their coveted record deal or condemn them to the purgatory of nine-to-five monotony. The ensemble is a motley crew of divergent personalities and unfulfilled potentials. Lee, the band leader and drummer, is a bundle of contradictions, a perfectionist who struggles to see his projects to fruition. Mike, the chief songwriter, vainly attempts to mirror the tortured-artist lifestyle of his rock-and-roll idols, while Donnie, the charismatic lead singer with a roving eye, adds a dash of unpredictability. They are managed by the well-meaning but inept Big Frank, whose loyalty is their rock in the tumultuous sea of the music industry. The band's dynamics take an unexpected turn with the sudden demise of their bassist, Jim, whose drunken escapade ends in a shocking electrocution. His replacement, the fiery Trixie, not only takes up the bass guitar but also ignites a spark in the stoic Lee. As they traverse the Midwest and New York State, the band wrestles with their inner demons and the specter of failure, while also exploring budding romances and deep-seated rivalries. Their journey culminates in a high-stakes performance at a bustling state fair, where a powerful record company executive is expected to be in attendance. Can the Handy Kaufmans overcome their self-destructive tendencies and seize the opportunity that could catapult them into the limelight? As they teeter on the brink of the future they've always dreamt of, the band members must confront their deepest fears and ambitions, in a world where only the strongest survive.
