Plot

In the bustling year of 1929, amidst the glamour and excitement of Broadway, ambitious Nanette Carter, a wealthy heiress and aspiring entertainer, dreams of stardom. Under the tutelage of her friends, the gifted composer Jimmy Smith and dancer Tommy Trainor, Nanette polishes her singing and dancing prowess. Her past acquaintance, Larry Blair, who once harbored feelings for her wealth, controls the rights to Jimmy's latest songs, intended for a Broadway show where Jimmy and Tommy will be performing. The recent stock market crash has Larry scrambling for investors, and Nanette, despite their stormy history, seems like a likely candidate. A twist unfolds when Nanette is suggested to replace Larry's current girlfriend, Bea Darcy, as the lead. Seeing this as her golden opportunity, she pledges the necessary $25,000 for the production. However, unbeknownst to Nanette, she and her uncle, J. Maxwell Bloomhaus, are flat broke. In a poorly timed decision, Max converted all their government bonds into stock, which was decimated in the crash. Inspired by a conversation with their lawyer about the dangers of saying "yes," Nanette makes a whimsical wager with her uncle. If she can say "no" to every question for the next 48 hours, she'll be allowed to cash in $25,000 of her bonds, which, unbeknownst to her, no longer exist. Her loyal yet sharp-tongued secretary, Pauline Hastings, becomes the official referee, ensuring Nanette adheres to her "no" responses. As the bet ensues, Uncle Max cunningly attempts to make Nanette lose, as he's unable to fulfill his side of the bet if defeated. Nanette's stream of "no"'s leads to a flurry of misunderstandings, jeopardizing not only the Broadway show but her budding romance with Jimmy. In this delightful whirlwind of ambition, romance, and comedy, the question lingers - even if Nanette wins the bet, will the victory be worth it if she loses the show, Jimmy, or both, especially when the promised money is just an illusion?
