Charity Hope Valentine, a taxi dancer in a seedy dance hall, lives her life with unyielding faith in love, despite the harsh realities encircling her. Alongside her two best friends, Nickie and Helene, they find themselves in the unenviable profession of selling their bodies to any man willing to pay. Charity's heart, worn openly on her sleeve, is often exploited by sleazy men who capitalize on her desperation for love. Her friends, Nickie and Helene, know all too well that her romantic tales, though grounded in reality, are often embellished and fantasized versions of actual events, such as her alleged encounter with the famed Italian movie star, Vittoro Vitale. After an eight-year stint in this unsavory business, Charity realizes that her job is a roadblock to meeting decent men. Despite her lack of skills for more "respectable" occupations, she is determined to change her course. This is when she crosses paths with Oscar Lindquist, an insurance actuary. Oscar, under the false impression that Charity works at a bank, falls for her. Charity, in turn, is enamored by the love Oscar directs her way, giving her a glimmer of hope in her otherwise disappointing existence. The plot unravels as it questions whether Oscar's love for Charity will endure upon learning her truth.
