For a decade, Susan Slade, a seventeen-year-old American girl, has lived a sheltered life in the remote Chilean desert where her father serves as a chief engineer with Corbett Mines. Her innocence, a product of her isolation, is on the brink of a seismic shift as she and her parents relocate to Monterey, California. Unbeknownst to Susan and her mother Leah, this move is necessitated by a heart condition plaguing her father Roger, only alleviated by rest.
