Plot

In the shadowy world of crime and intrigue, Clay Dalzell, a criminal lawyer and amateur sleuth, is entrusted with a perplexing task by his friend, Tim Winthrop. Tim's sweetheart, Alice, vanished without leaving any trace a year ago. The mystery thickens when they attend a theater performance with Clay's potential bride-to-be, Donna Mantin. The star of the show, Mary Smith, is recognized by Tim as his missing Alice. However, her sudden flight from the stage after Tim's shout of "Alice" only deepens the enigma. A seasoned reporter, Tommy Tennant, claims to hold the key to Mary's sudden disappearance. But before he can reveal the elusive secret to Clay, he falls victim to a fatal bullet in Clay's apartment, leaving Clay injured and filled with questions. The labyrinthine plot teems with suspects. Roger Classon and his wife Jerry are in a desperate search for Alice, whose testimony can potentially save Roger's friend from an unjust sentence to the electric chair. Meanwhile, Abe Ohlman, the man behind Mary's stage show, and Jimmy Kinland, a gangster with secrets lurking in his sly grin, both seem to have more connections to the mystery than they initially let on. Caught in this intricate web of deceit and danger, it's up to Clay, assisted by the determined Donna, to unmask the killer and uncover Alice's whereabouts. Will they be able to navigate this treacherous maze and bring the truth to light? The stage is set for a thrilling unraveling of truths in "Star of Midnight."
