Plot

In the heartwarming tale of "So You're Going to Be a Father," we follow the whimsical journey of Joe McDoakes, a man ordinarily thriving in happiness, but with a peculiar aversion to children. This disdain is reciprocated by the neighborhood kids, fostering a mutual animosity. However, when his beloved wife, Alice McDoakes, announces her pregnancy, Joe finds himself swept up in a whirlwind of emotions, initially filled with a sense of shock that soon morphs into a newfound excitement. As the realization of impending fatherhood truly settles in, Joe begins to see this child as more of his own achievement than a shared venture. He plunges headfirst into the role of an expectant father, experiencing vicarious sympathy pains and indulging in his future baby's toys with a childlike enthusiasm that surpasses any potential interest from the baby itself. Simultaneously, he becomes an attentive husband, tending to Alice's strange midnight cravings with unconditional dedication. Caught in the throes of exhilaration and anxiety, Joe begins to imagine a future for his unborn child. He envisions a son who mirrors his father, attends West Point, and eventually ascends to the highest office in the land. Fueled by this dream, his prayers intensify as the couple embarks on the nerve-racking journey to the hospital for the delivery. Fast forward sixteen years to the McDoakes household - has Joe's fervent dreams and prayers materialized? Or has he been thrust into a reality far from his imaginings? "So You're Going to Be a Father" is a delightful exploration of fatherhood filled with laughter, love, and the occasional fortune teller.
