In the heart of average America, we encounter the Cooper family, led by a widowed father and his two children - the caring elder son, Ben, who has adopted the role of 'mother' and his sprightly younger sister, Angie. Fortune smiles upon the Coopers when they win an extraordinary prize - a futuristic, computerized dwelling, complete with a cyborg housekeeper known as PAT (Personal Applied Technology).
