Plot

In a world that hums and clicks with the rhythm of technology, Sarah Sparks stands as a freelance technologist from New York, her soul more attuned to the language of machines and computers than the complexities of human relationships. As a woman who finds solace in the precision of mechanically moving parts, her world is jolted off its axis when she discovers her pregnancy. Despite the warmth of her partner, Leon's love, the impending arrival of a newborn stirs a whirlpool of anxiety within her. Sarah's world, usually filled with the cold logic of circuits and codes, is now revolving around the organic, the unpredictable, the wholly human. As she ventures into the third trimester of her pregnancy, she reluctantly travels to Los Angeles, drawn by her sister Emily's plans of a baby shower. Emily, the epitome of motherhood, surrounds Sarah with a gaggle of fellow über-moms, an alien world to the tech-savvy Sarah. However, amidst the pastel-colored balloons and the baby shower frivolities, Sarah finds herself drowning in deeper waters. She realizes, with a sense of urgency, the need to reconnect with her estranged mother, Marjorie Sparks. Marjorie, a ghost from Sarah's past, had disappeared into thin air after her divorce from Sarah's father, Henry, leaving a chasm between mother and daughter. Sarah's quest for her mother's whereabouts is a journey through a labyrinth, a process more intricate than any algorithm she has ever coded. Marjorie, having severed her ties with the world, is now living off-the-grid, a stark contrast to Sarah's technologically driven existence. Despite learning that Marjorie is aware of her pregnancy but chooses to remain distant, Sarah's resolve to find her mother is undeterred. Embarking on a journey that extends beyond the realms of her comfort zone, Sarah traverses the country in her rental van, her heart filled with a mix of anticipation and dread. Along this path of self-discovery, she seeks the source of her anxiety, her estranged mother, and perhaps, a better understanding of her own impending role as a parent. The movie "Small, Beautifully Moving Parts" unravels the comic yet poignant narrative of a woman navigating the uncharted territories of impending motherhood in the age of technology. Will Sarah find her off-the-grid mother? And if she does, will Marjorie hold the answers to all of Sarah's unspoken questions? While the film does not reveal all, it promises a journey worth embarking upon.
