In the opulent heart of the city's high society, Madame Helene Smith and her loyal partner, Mazie Mason, run a lavish salon dedicated to the beautification and rejuvenation of women's faces and bodies. Rising from the gritty streets of New York's Tenth Avenue, they've created a sanctuary for the rich and near-rich, a place filled with whispered secrets and hidden scandals, aptly named "Slander House" by the astute newspaper columnist, Terry Kent.
Terry, a frequent visitor, is hopelessly in love with the street-smart Mazie. Simultaneously, the distinguished Dr. Herbert Stallings, complete with his signature pencil mustache, harbors an unrequited love for the aloof Helene. The tranquil routine of this scandalous beauty haven is disrupted when the sultry showgirl and notorious gold-digger, Ruth DeMilo, struts in, followed closely by the charming Pat Fenton, who is instantly smitten with Helene.
Their world spirals into chaos when a cabaret visit leads to a public brawl instigated by Fenton's lawyer, George Horton, who openly challenges Helene's integrity. The scandal sends ripples through their clients, particularly Mrs. Horton, an overweight matron desperate to regain her youth at Helene's salon. She becomes increasingly suspicious of her husband's extramarital affairs, especially with Ruth DeMilo, who is in reality, Horton's secret lover.
In a whirlwind of events, Helene, attempting to avoid Fenton's advances, unwittingly finds herself in Horton's car leading to a dramatic accident. This incident further fuels Mrs. Horton's suspicions, driving her to the brink of despair and a botched suicide attempt using a bottle of hair dye. Amidst the turmoil, Helene accepts Dr. Stallings' repeated proposal, while still battling her feelings for Fenton.
As Mrs. Horton's condition deteriorates, Helene convinces Fenton to bring Horton to his wife's bedside, sparking a heartfelt reconciliation.
